What are the best apple tree varieties to grow in my garden? (8 replies)

With the purchase of my new house I inherited two apple trees in my garden. One doesn't seem to be doing anything, and the other is so straggly and too close to the fence that I would like to remove it. I want to replace both of them with new apple trees, and wondered if anyone has any suggestions on the best varieties to grow in the garden?

Ideally I would like a cooking apple and dessert apple. Any suggestions would be appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Gardening_Graham ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you have any suggestions on dessert apples which can be grown with Bramleys? I know for some apples you need 1 or 2 other pollinators?

Ideally I only want one cooking apple and one dessert apple. Luckily someone else nearby has a few apple trees in their garden, but I am not sure what varieties theirs are.

Bramley seedling is in flowering group 3 and can be pollinated by any other apple in groups 2,3,and 4.

If you want to select an apple this link might be useful ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Oldchap. Do you know if I would need one or two other apple trees to pollinate it?

I really like braeburn apple's too but they don't appear to be on that list.

Hi again NewHomeNewGarden, Braeburn are a great choice, but they aren't self-fertile so you'd definitely need another tree and Bramley will do just fine.

I look forward to seeing posts of the first Apple and blackberry crumble on here!

Hi Gardening_Graham,

Brilliant, thanks.

I think I will look at getting a Bramley seedling and a Braeburn then ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Keyleigh Alice,

You could try 'Avalon Pride' on a dwarfing rootstock. It is resistant to peach leaf curl disease, so you don't ever need to spray it with Bordeaux mixture!

'Crimson Bonfire' is nice too with its deep burgundy leaves, it makes a nice feature even when the tree is not in flower or fruit ๐Ÿ™‚
