You will want to use special cactus compost, widely available at any good garden centre. The slightly acidic compost is a blend of peat, grit and specific nutrients to provide an ideal free draining growing medium for succulents such as the Christmas cactus.
With regards to feeding, the cactus will only need fertilising about 2 – 4 times a year with a normal houseplant feed. When the cactus is in growth (winter) you’ll ideally need to feed it every 4 weeks with a high potash liquid feed instead to encourage flowering. Once flowering has finished, reduce watering and keep the compost just moist.
