My dwarf/french beans grew in a hook shape with no beans. I gave my cousin some young plants and hers developed in the same way. They were in date and I followed the guidance on the packet. Any ideas why?

There are several reasons why your dwarf/French beans might have grown into a hooked shape without producing any beans. Here are some possibilities:

Stressful Growing Conditions:

  • Temperature Fluctuations: Beans prefer consistent temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Sudden drops or spikes in temperature can stress the plants, leading to abnormal growth and reduced flowering/bean production.
  • Insufficient Sunlight: Beans need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering. Lack of sunlight can cause them to stretch and become leggy, with fewer flowers and beans.
  • Underwatering or Overwatering: Both underwatering and overwatering can stress bean plants. Inconsistent watering can lead to stunted growth, misshapen pods, and a decrease in flower and bean production.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: Lack of essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium can hinder growth and flowering in bean plants.

Pollination Issues:

  • Lack of Pollinators: Beans require pollination to produce beans. If there are not enough bees or other pollinators around, the flowers may not set fruit.
  • Poor Flower Development: Cool temperatures, heavy rain during flowering, or certain diseases can affect flower development, reducing the chance of bean production.

Other Potential Causes:

  • Planting Depth: Planting bean seeds too deep can hinder germination and seedling development.
  • Pest or Disease: While less likely for dwarf beans, certain pests or diseases might damage the plants and affect pod development.

Here are some tips to prevent this from happening again:

  • Choose the Right Variety: Select dwarf bean varieties known for their reliability and suitability for your climate.
  • Sowing Time: Follow the recommended sowing time on the seed packet for your region. This ensures the plants experience optimal temperatures during their critical growth stages.
  • Proper Planting: Sow seeds at the recommended depth and spacing mentioned on the seed packet.
  • Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  • Sunlight: Plant beans in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Pollination: If necessary, you can hand-pollinate your bean plants by gently transferring pollen from the male flower stamen to the female flower stigma with a cotton swab.

By following these tips and addressing potential causes, you can increase your chances of getting a successful harvest of straight, well-developed bean infinite craft pods next season.
