Hydrangeas species offshoot (No replies)

Hi

I have a large hydrangea in my front garden, originally grown from a half leaf cutting. It is now about twenty years old. In my back garden I have a completely different species of hydrangea. So they are not near each other. Somehow my old hydrangea has put off a shoot of the other species from one of its branches.

How is this possible. No grafting has taken place.
