Some bamboos are described as invasive because they have an indefinite spread and just keep travelling! However, Phyllostachys nigra (Black bamboo) is a ‘clump forming’, non-invasive bamboo which will increase in size over the years to a maximum spread of around 3m (10ft) – but this would be a very mature plant indeed, and it would take many years to reach this size!
