How do I get rid of bindweed in my garden? (7 replies)

Help! I moved into my new house this year and I have finally started to get round to working on the garden. Unfortunately for me, I seem to have bindweed tangling itself around the existing plants and popping up here there and everywhere.

What is the best way to get rid of it? I am concerned that if I plant my new plants in the garden that they will just get taken over and killed by the bindweed. Any advice anyone can give is much appreciated. 🙂

It's really hard to get rid of. Even if you empty the borders and chase the roots right down it's hard to get rid of every scrap of root, and unfortunately even a tiny piece of root left in the ground will start to grow and new plant. They will also self seed, so don't let them flower. A good tip is to give them a tall cane to grow up rather than tangling up with your plants, you can then treat the bind weed with weedkiller without risk to your plants.

Luckily I have been cutting the flowers off as I see them.

Unfortunately my neighbour doesn't seem to take care of their garden which doesn't help, as some of it will have come through there.

I'll give your suggestion a try and see how I get on. Thanks Doris.

You have to kill the roots and they are almost impossible to dig up, so chemicals are the only real answer. Use canes to get the bindweed away from your plants and then spray with glyphosate (Eg Roundup) or if you can't get them away from your plants use the Roundup gel applicator on the bindweed leaves. You might have to do this 2 or 3 times. If your neighbour doesn't do the same though, it will look for you and it will bind you.

Thanks bmagrath.

I'll have to give Roundup a go. I think the gel applicator is what I need, as it is tangling around some of my plants. Unfortunately my neighbours don't appear to take care of their garden, so I will try my best to keep it at bay as much as possible.

Use the dab on applicator or a paint brush to get the leaves of the weed rather than spraying everything.

Repeat and be persistent.

Thanks DianeD. I did buy the dab on applicator version and also a spray. It seems to work and kill those which I have attacked. It just feels like its going to take forever to get rid of it 🙁 Wish there was a magic wand.

I had bind weed at my last home. Spent countless hours digging out the roots. It's amazing how much there is underground. That year I was seeing very little bind weed and dug it out immediately. The next year it was appearing everywhere again. The only way to get rid of it is to keep digging out the roots as soon as you see any sign of bindweed. An arduous task but you will eventually win with persistence.
