That’s a tough question. It is very difficult to establish how many different types of basil there really are. Estimates seem to range from 50 to 150 but most of these would be cultivars or hybrids of Ocimum basilicum. It is quite common for the same variety to be sold under different names which makes the question even harder to answer!
