Does anyone know the best way to protect Asparagus from the Asparagus beetle .I won't use any chemicals as I'm growing it organically.Has anybody had any experience of using  a fleece barrier like the one used to deter carrot root fly .

Hi Englishklute,Asparagus beetles lay their eggs in the Asparagus berries, and these hatch during late winter/early Spring. So the single most important way of organic control is by removing and disposing of the old yellow foliage carrying berries at the end of the season. You could also plant one of the all male varieties, as these will not produce berries. They are far less attractive to the dreaded beetle, unless there are other Asparagus around, like you often do in an allotment...Hope it helps 🙂

It's quite an old row of asparagus I have grown , cut down the yellowing foliage every autumn .still get attacked  by the beetle. I might try a fleece cover before the asparagus start shooting up.thanks for the advice very helpful
