Planting Tree Lilies

I have just received (Mid December) some tree lily bulbs. From what I read I can happily plant them in a container now and leave them in my cold greenhouse until the spring. I would prefer to plant them in the flower border. However, although I can find instructions HOW to plant tree lily bulbs outside, I can't find any information WHEN to plant them outside. Do I have to wait until the soil warms up, if so how should I store bulbs in the interim? Alternatively, can I start them off in individual pots (I have some nice deep rose pots available) and then plant them out later (WHEN?)? I read that they can be lifted over the winter, but again no indication of when to replant outside or how best to store overwinter. Any help would be appreciated.
