Mysterious gunge

<p>I am a really new gardener and I was trying to dig weeds out of a border when a mass of custardy gunge, creamy coloured, burst out of the soil from under a plant.  What on earth is it? Is it poisonous?  I am absolutely freaking out about it.</p>
