I've used half a grapefruit (hollowed out) in the past, turn it upside down and they are attracted to it, in the morning they'll be hiding inside and you can dispose of them as you see fit?! 🙂

That's a cool idea Gardening_Graham, never heard of that before.

What about trying copper tape? I guess that would only work if you are talking about pots rather than plants in the ground however. I have heard egg shells, coffee granules or grit might work but I wouldn't necessarily hold out much hope.

Newbie to gardening with a little bit of horti knowledge but still needing all the advice I can get

Hi Poppy,

A tub filled with a mixture of beer & water attracts slugs like magnets! You then do need to collect and dispose of them or feed them to the birds (don't put too much beer, or the birds may not fly straight anymore...)

Ferric phosphate does work, but it is probably just as dangerous to pets as metaldehyde pellets, and dogs in particular because of the chelated EDTA used as an additive to enhance the iron absorption.

Nematodes are safe, but you will need to do regular applications.

If you are not a fan of grapefruits, melon rinds also work wonders 🙂
