Fast growing hedging for use next to a low fence (2 replies)

I wouldn't say I am a complete beginner gardener, however when it comes to hedging I have no idea.

In my back garden I have a low fence between myself and my neighbour. For the majority of it, there are existing shrubs which create a nice screen between the two gardens. However, there is a section at the top of my garden which doesn't have any screening and simply is the low fence. It's about a metre or two long and I am interested in putting some hedging there so the garden is a little less open for my neighbours to peer over.

I am looking for something which is fast growing and easy to maintain. I don't particularly want to use Leylandii, so I wondered if anyone has any suggestions or experience with hedging in their gardens?

You could try escallonia - evergreen and with pretty flowers. You can trim it to a hedge but it does grow quickly. Berberis is another popular one, but can be prickly.

Someone had suggested that I should try Lonicera nitida and that they make a lovely informal hedge? I'm planning on growing them near to a vegetable patch, so something prickly is probably best avoided.
